SEA LIONS HEALTHY AND READY TO CELEBRATE 18 YEARS
AT PIER 39'S WEST MARINA, SAN FRANCISCO
SAN FRANCISCO --- On November 7, 2007 the Cosco Busan oil spill presented a hazard for inhabitants of the San Francisco Bay, but fortunately to date the sea lions are healthy and thriving at PIER 39’s K-Dock. This is good news for the thousands of spectators that visit PIER 39 to see the playful pinnipeds. PIER 39 is thankful the sea lions were unharmed by the wide spread disaster and in partnership with The Marine Mammal Center, we want to spread the news.
On Saturday, January 19, 2008 from noon to 4 p.m. PIER 39 will celebrate the 18th Anniversary of the sea lions' arrival making PIER 39 their home. Through the years, these playful pinnipeds have taken up residence to the delight of thousands of spectators. Each January, their numbers soar as hundreds of marine mammals return for the plentiful herring supply in the Bay. In addition to enjoying hundreds of sea lions in close proximity, visitors can talk with knowledgeable Marine Mammal Center docents and stop by the Whale Bus for a thorough educational experience. PIER 39's K-Dock has been designated a "Watchable Wildlife" viewing area by the California Watchable Wildlife Project.
The Marine Mammal Center continues to monitor the sea lions at K-Dock to keep track of population counts there as well as identify animals that need medical attention such as those with entanglements.
