THE SEABIN PROJECT
The PIER 39 Marina has teamed up with the Seabin Project to help clean up waste in our own marina. The Seabin project is dedicated to keeping our oceans clean with the goal of providing practical and tangible solutions to reducing plastics in the oceans. The idea was to replicate rubbish bins in the water, much like on land. Over time, the scope of the project evolved into a comprehensive research, technology and educational initiative with global interest and reach.
The Seabin Project believes the world’s marinas, ports and yacht clubs are the ideal place to start. These relatively controlled environments provide the perfect locations for Seabin installations.
How does it work? The Seabin sucks in water from the surface, collecting floating rubbish and passes it through a catch bag inside the unit, with a pump designed to put the water back into the marina leaving the litter and debris trapped in the catch bag to be disposed of properly.
