SAN FRANCISCO – PIER 39 has joined the ‘Skip the Straw’ movement and is dedicated to reducing the use of plastic straws on its 45-acre waterfront property.

PIER 39 welcomes 15 million guests annually and as the most-visited attraction in San Francisco, will share the ’Skip the Straw’ message with its local, national and international visitors.  This campaign encourages guests to make a difference.

Taylor Safford, PIER 39 President and CEO, said: “PIER 39 is taking an affirmative step to reduce the impact plastic pollution is having on our waterways and wildlife by working with The PIER’s 14 full-service restaurants, all of our eateries, as well as Blue & Gold Fleet and Adventure Cat Sailing Charters to convert to paper straws or to provide straws only upon request.” Safford adds, “I am extremely proud of the leadership and conviction of our PIER 39 businesses who are making this effort possible.”

“We are pleased to extend our full support to this lasting partnership with PIER 39 and its many food outlets participating in the ‘Skip the Straw’ initiative,” says George Jacob, President and CEO of the Smithsonian Affiliated Aquarium of the Bay. “We must take action now to free our oceans of plastic pollution that endangers marine life and eventually impacts our own. This effort is one small step that we can all take.”

PIER 39 is collaborating on the ‘Skip the Straw’ initiative with Aquarium of the Bay and three other non-profit organizations:  The Ocean Conservancy, The Last Plastic Straw and The Fund for Sustainable Tomorrows.
